Former Lakewood Police Chief Ron Burns, 71, dies in Arizona

    Former Lakewood Police Chief Ron Burns has died, the department announced Saturday. He was 71.

    Burns, a 35-year law enforcement veteran, was named Lakewood police chief in 2001. He led the department for six years.

    “Chief Burns’ legacy will include an uncompromising pledge to the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, outstanding leadership, and an unfailing loyalty and commitment to serving the citizens of Lakewood,” a post on the Lakewood Police Department’s Facebook page said.

    Burns began his career in Tempe, Arizona, and rose through the ranks before being named as chief of the Kirkland, Washington, police department. He also served as police chief in Tempe and as executive director for the Arizona 100 Club, a nonprofit organization that supports the families of officers seriously wounded or killed in the line of duty.

    Burns returned to law enforcement to take the job as Lakewood police chief. He died Saturday in Gilbert, Arizona, Lakewood police spokesman Alex Curry said.

    The cause of death wasn’t given.
